Yahoo has quietly announced a microblogging service called Yahoo Meme. This service is now available in English after its launch in Spanish and Portuguese. It is very similar to Twitter, Tumblr and others. This is a direct look alike of Twitter and it is safe to say that because of market reach of Yahoo, Twitter may face stiff competition from this new service.
Currently, Yahoo Meme is invite-only i.e. you need an invitation to create an account. Once you register, you will get a blank blog where you can post updates, share images, music and videos. Your URL will look like http://meme.yahoo.com/UserName.
Yahoo, which is slowly losing its market slice of the web, is taking rapid measures to improve its situation and make a come back. Yahoo faces stiff competition from Google which has launched a number of services which have enabled it to wrestle user-base away from Yahoo.
There are definitely many bumps in Yahoo’s way. For example, why would someone who is already using Twitter make the switch to Yahoo Meme? And then again, someone who doesn’t Twitter won’t think of Yahoo Meme either. Either, he/she will opt for Twitter which already has a huge user base or won’t use anything at all. That said, Yahoo Meme will definitely gain a huge-user base because a large number of Yahoo Email users will give it a try.
It seems like Yahoo has high expectations from Yahoo Meme. But, only the coming next few months will say if Yahoo Meme will do any good to Yahoo in improving its appeal to users.
