What is Google’s “unexplained phenomenon”?

Today, Google’s search page logo has a UFO abducting one of the O’s with a laser beam. If you click on the logo, you will be pointed to search results for “unexplained phenomenon”.

Similar gimmicks are not new to Google. On all major occasions, Google displays similar logos which when clicked provide information on the occasion. But,
what exactly does this “unexplained phenomenon” mean?

Some bloggers have speculated that this is a reference to the new movie District 9 on aliens and other related phenomenon.

Google has also put up a cryptic clue on its Twitter page which reads “1.12.12 25.15.21.18 15 1.18.5 2.5.12.15.14.7 20.15 21.19″. This clue is followed by a Twitpic link to the logo.

This clue is quite easy to decode. By taking 1=A, 2=B, 3=C, and so on, th numbers translate to “All your O are belong to us”. This is definitely a play on the Internet meme “All your base are belong to us” which started in 2000-2002 and became famous through Something Awful message forums.

Quite strangely, the logo file is also named “Go_gle.gif”. Google also owns the domain “gogle.com”.

Officially Google has released the following statement:

“We consider the second ‘o’ critical to user recognition of our brand and pronunciation of our name. We are actively looking into the mysterious tweet that has appeared on the Google twitter stream and the disappearance of the ‘o’ on the Google homepage. We hope to have an update in the coming weeks.”

Maybe this has got something to do with Google’s birthday. Google was incorporated on September 7th 1998. Then again, it may also have got something to with the Exeter incident. And also, it was on September 8, 1966 that the original series of Star Trek was aired on the NBC.

Or may be, it is a combination of all these that Google is using to justify the “O” being abducted by a UFO.
