Toshiba has unveiled its first Blu-ray disc player. Designated as the BDX2000, this player costs $250 but is very ordinary.
It provides 1080p digital output and supports Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0. This allows the player to take advantage of interactive features through an Ethernet connection. Sony calls this technology BD-Live. This allows movie-studios to provide downloadable content such as bonus scenes, subtitles, ringtones and interactive games with Blu-ray DVDs.
The player’s front panel is well designed and polished and drops down to reveal the primary function buttons of the player. The player can be connected to digital TVs using a HDMI connector. If the player is being used along with Toshiba’s REGZA LCD TV, both the devices can be controlled using the same remote.
The player also features a SD card slot. This is very useful for viewing photos and video captured on a digital camera.
The BDX2000 will be available sometime is November and will be priced at approximately $250.
Last month, Toshiba announced that a Blu-ray player was on the offering. Earlier, it had joined the Blu-ray Disc Association, a body which is responsible for the development and promotion of the Sony-backed Blu-ray format.
Last year, Toshiba has supported the HD DVD format. However, after the Blu-ray format became triumphant in the format battle, Toshiba tried other avenues to compete against Blu-ray. Falling prices and rising sales of HDTVs finally forced Toshiba to accept defeat and release its own player.
