			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Apple first came up with the iPhone in 1983. It was not a &#8216;smartphone&#8217; but rather a landline with a stylus controlled screen.</p>
<p>The phone&#8217;s design was conceived by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hartmut_Esslinger" target="_blank">Hartmut Esslinger</a>, an influential computer designer who also founded a company called Frogdesign. The original iPhone was really decades ahead at that time in terms of innovation.</p>
<p>Information about the original iPhone comes from Stanford University&#8217;s collection of Apple inside documents. The archives were donated to Stanford University in 1997 after Steve Jobs&#8217; triumphant return to Apple that year.</p>
<p>The 1983 iPhone is one of the many prototypes that never made it to the market. There is also a device that looks very similar to the iPad. Despite being around 30 years old the original iPhone looks very modern. A similar device could still have market viability.</p>
