Sprint to launch first 4G WiMAX Android smartphone in 2010

ImageThere are speculations that Sprint will be launching a 4G Android smartphone made by Samsung in 2010. If that happens, Sprint will become the first wireless carrier to offer a 4G WiMAX Android handset. Android smartphones are gaining traction in the market and so competitors are making no delays in launching their own Android based handsets.

Sprint has a major stake in Clearwire’s WiMAX business. It is making attempts to get its network up and running across major cities in the US. WiMAX can provide superfast broadband speeds–way ahead of competitors T-Mobile and AT & T. So, Sprints attempts to make moolah by putting together an Android based WiMAX handset makes perfect business sense.

If Sprint succeeds in pushing its 4G Android handset to the market on time, it may be able to clinch the “world’s first” title. However, we cannot be so sure about this as competitors won’t be left behind for long. Verizon Wireless is making all attempts to get its 4G LTE network up and running by early 2010. LTE is capable of providing much faster mobile broadband speeds that WiMAX and so if Verizon releases an LTE Android handset, it could give Sprint a run for its money!

As of now, we can’t be sure about anything. However, just keep waiting for a 4G Samsung smartphone going to Sprint in the very near future.
