Since the last one week since Apple’s Mac OS X Snow Leopard has become available, user have reported very few upgrading problems. This makes Snow Leopard Apple’s most compatible release till date.
Not everyone is impressed with the way Apple handled the new operating system’s release. However, it turns out that user are not complaining either. According some “internal sources”, Apple maintained an enormous amount of data on third-party applications to ensure compatibility with their latest release.
Apple not only kept record of many of the widely-used application, but also many shareware applications to ensure complete compatibility. If any application was not compatible, the developers were informed about it and were offered assistance to make to fully compliant with the latest release.
Apple didn’t offer a public beta of Snow Leopard which left many fans unhappy. However, many businesses and individuals were invited to test the beta versions of the latest release. Developers had access to the code through Apple’s Developer Program to not only test the OS but also test their applications on the new system.
Apple started collaborating with third-party software developers in June 2008. This ensured maximum time for developers to check their software applications in the new operating system.
While complete data is not yet available, there is enough proof to conclude that there are very few upgrade problems with Snow Leopard.
That said, the new release is not fully without problems. Several applications have been found to be incompatible with the new OS. Apple has also posted a list of software that are not fully compatible with Snow Leopard.
There are people who believe that Apple should have handled things differently. First and foremost, Apple should have released a public beta. Then, it should have provided a pre-upgrade compatibility checker. It also have given more time to developers to polish their software to work with the new OS.
