Microsoft wins delay of order tied to Word patent dispute

Recently, Microsoft Corporation won a delay of a federal-court order that mandated that the software giant stop MS Word, its flagship word processor software that is a part of its Office productivity suite.

Last month, a Toronto based company, i4i won a $290 million lawsuit against Microsoft which claimed that it had infringed one of its patents.

A District Court in Texas has barred Microsoft from selling MS Word. The court gave Microsoft time till October 10th to comply with the order. Microsoft said that the deadline could not be met.

However last Thursday, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington deferred the order until both the companies come to an understanding and resolve the patent dispute themselves. Arguments on Microsoft’s appeal of the court verdict have been scheduled for a hearing on September 23rd in Washington.
