Intel may launch Nehalem based Core i5 processors on September 6th this year. The processor is codenamed Lynnfield. Some sources in the Taiwanese motherboard industry also reveal that Intel will introduce two new Core i& processors in the same month. Earlier, Intel was rumored to introduce Core i7 950 and 975 Extreme processors on May 31 but the rumor was proven wrong as the CPUs didn’t arrive as mentioned.
According to these sources, the new Core i5 CPUs are actually Nehalem Core i7 with the memory channel removed. The QuickPath Interconnect will be replaced with Direct Media Interface. The processor will be clocked at 2.66 GHz and will have an 8MB L3 cache. The processors can be overclocked to 3.2 GHz and will feature Intel Socket LGA 1156. The processor will cost $196 per 1000 CPUs. End-user price may be a little higher.
Along with the Core i5, Intel is also rumored to release two new quad-core processors. These are Core i7 860 (2.8 GHz and 8MB L3) and Core i7 870 (2.9 Ghz and 8MB L3). Both the processors will be based on Socket LGA 1156 and are based on Nehalem micro-architecture “Bloomfield” Core i7 processors. They support Hyper Threading with the new Socket LGA 1156. The Core i7 860 and i7 870 can be overclocked to 3.46 Ghz and 3.6 Ghz respectively. These processors are priced at $284 and $562 respectively.
