Colombian computer manufacturer Haleron has launched a new netbook that features two Intel-Atom processors. This netbook dubbed the Swordfish Net 102 Dual was designed especially for students and working professionals who need more computing power and multitasking capabilities. Haleron has ensured that the Net 102 Dual is affordable to everyone in South America.
The Swordfish Net 102 Dual is a standard netbook which features all the usual specifications–a 10 inch monitor, a 4-in-1 card reader, 2 GB of memory and a 3G module. However the main difference lies in the chipset. Haleron has modified the Intel M945 chipset to accommodate two Intel Atom processors. These two processors give the Net 102 netbook superb computing power. The performance is almost similar to a dual-core processor.
On the minus side, the Net 102 is not so efficient when it comes to battery life. The netbook will work only for two and a half hours on a three-cell battery. On a six-cell battery, it will work for about four and a half hours. Lower power efficiency defeats the purpose of using Intel Atom processors as these are well-known for their efficiency.
The concept of a netbook with dual processors seems a bit strange. Notebooks are not meant for heavy computing tasks. They are meant for mobility and smaller size. If higher computing power is needed, it makes sense to invest in a laptop.
However, one area where the Net 102 is a better alternative to a laptop is its price. At $449 it is very cheap when compared to a conventional laptop and yet offers similar performance. Most students may not buy the Net 102 because they already use laptops and other netbooks. Convincing them to switch to the new netbook may take sometime.
