Google Unveils Chrome OS

A few days back Google unveiled its new operating system–Chrome OS in a public press meet. Google confirmed that it was actively developing the operating system it announced a few months back. The search engine giant had stated that its goals were simplicity and speed. Now that Google has made available the source code for the OS, initial tests do indicate that the main priorities may indeed be weaknesses.

First and foremost, Chrome OS is very simple. It looks like a browser with a few bells and whistles. Features other than the browser include a battery life indicator and a window manager. The current source-build even lacks a shutdown button.

However on the plus side, the OS has the potential to be extremely fast and snappy. However, as of now mixed results have been reported. This can be due to many reasons. May be the source code of the OS is not yet mature or may be it is due to the fact that all testing is being done on a virtual machine.

Right now, it is too early to say if Chrome OS will be a hit or not. However, we can expect it to make some gains in the OS market due to Google’s reputation and market penetration.
