How to Cite a Website
Every time you use someone’s work in your assignments or papers, you should give them credit. Using information without providing references is considered plagiarism. For this reason, it is essential that provide proper references and follow the standards. This article explains how to cite your website in your works.
First and foremost, determine the name of the author of the website. This should be used first in the citation and formatted with the others last name followed by a comma and then the first initial of author’s first name followed by a period. Some websites may have more than one author. In such cases, you should use the name of the author who wrote the article. If this information is not available, you can use the name of the webmaster.
Find out the year of publication. This information may generally be available at the beginning of the article. You should place the year of publication after the author’s name and within parenthesis.
The name of the article should be listed after the year of publication and with only the first letter of the first word capitalized. The rest of it should be in lowercase. This should be followed with a period.
You should also include the date on which the information was retrieved. This should be listed with the word “Retrieved” followed by a comma and the month, date and year the article was accessed.
Follow the date retrieved with the word “from” and then the name of the website. In most cases the name of the site can be found at the top of the page. Follow the title of the page with the words “web site.”
Complete the citation with the URL of the webpage being used.
