A report at PPCGeeks provides us with the first insight about the upcoming Windows Phone 7 or Windows Mobile 7. More details are expected to be presented at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this month.

Here are the features that will be present in the Windows Phone 7:

- User interface codenamed “METRO” which will be very similar to that of the Zune HD with a complete revamp of the “Start” screen.

- No Flash support

- Application installation through service based delivery. Application installation via storage card will not be possible.

- No Multi-Tasking support. Applications will “Pause” when in the background, however will support notifications via push notifications.

- Marketplace will now support “try before you buy” as well as an API

- No NETCF backwards compatibility. This means the original rumor of no backward compatibility for applications holds to be true. That being said, there are high hopes of porting the NetCF to the newer platform easily.

- Microsoft is confident that devices will be ready by September 2010

- Full Zune Integration

- Windows Mobile Device Center will no longer be used. Zune software to take over syncing via PC.

- OEM Interfaces will not be allowed to run on the device. Say goodbye to Sense UI / SPB Mobile Shell / Point UI / Infinity, etc, etc

- Full XBOX Gaming Integration (Gamer tag, achievements, friends, avatars, merchandising, etc)

- Full support for social networking

The phone’s major plus point would be its compatibility with Zune and Xbox. On the other hand, lack of backward compatibility and multi-tasking support are things that may affect user opinions.

As of now we will have to wait and see what Microsoft is going to actually announce come February 15th, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

A Spanish-language blog has posted “inside information” revealing that Zune Phone and Windows 7 Mobile will debut sometime this month. Microsoft will announce the new Zune Phone at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The phone will reportedly run on the Tegra platform, NVIDIA’s powerful system-on-a-chip that was used in the Zune HD and will also be used by a number of upcoming tablets.

There have been many Zune Phone rumors, often referred to as “Project Pink” or the “Microsoft Zune Phone Experience”. The Zune Phone is expected to run Windows Mobile 7 and incorporate the Zune software — similar to the way Apple’s iPhone (iPhone) runs a flavor of what is essentially iPod software.

The Zune Phone could very well be Microsoft’s answer to the iPhone, but will it succeed in overtaking the iPhone from the market. From prior observations, we can say may be not, but who knows…
