Can excessive exercise cause diarrhea?

Many unpleasant symptoms can result due to excessive exercise. Diarrhea is one such symptom that is commonly observed after heavy exercise. While it can occur after any sort of exercising, it is more commonly observed in long-distance runners. It is not exactly known why diarrhea results after heavy exercise but there are some theories. There are several ways to reduce the incidence of diarrhea after exercise. However, if the condition still persists it is better to consult a doctor.

One explanation for the incidence of diarrhea after exercise is that during heavy exercise the blood supply to the intestines is significantly decreased. In fact, during heavy exercise the blood supply to the intestines is decreased by as much as 80%. This causes changes in the physiological functioning of the intestines and maybe the reason for diarrhea.

Another reason for the incidence of diarrhea after exercise may be due to the jarring motion that results from exercise or running. The jarring motion causes fecal matter to move at a much faster rate in the intestines, leading to diarrhea.

Exercising also causes increased synthesis of hormones in the body. Some of these hormones can interfere with the functioning of the intestines and lead to diarrhea.

There are many ways to prevent the incidence of diarrhea after exercise. The best option is to make dietary changes. It is best to avoid foods containing high amounts of fibers for at least 24 hours before exercising. If you exercise regularly, you can experiment by altering the amounts of fiber rich food that you consume.

You should also avoid sugar alcohols such as sorbitol which are known to cause loose stools. Consuming such foods can make the problem worse. Likewise, it is also advisable to avoid caffeine and foods containing high amounts of fat. As a matter of rule, you should not take anything for at least two hours before you start your exercise regimen. Exercise with a full stomach can be highly problematic.

It is also advisable to hydrate your body before, during and after exercise. Dehydration can result in diarrhea. It can also make you weak and you may not be able to exercise properly. Drink plenty of water or an energy drink at regular intervals while you are exercising.

If the problem is very severe, you could take antidiarrheal medications before starting exercise. However, taking these medications every day can have side effects and so is not advisable. It is advisable to consult your doctor if the condition  is severe.
