Apple to Launch Tablet Device in 2010?

Rumors are ripe that Apple will be launching its tablet device in 2010. According to “inside sources”, Apple will announce its tablet device on Tuesday, January 19, 2010. And the product will become available in May or June. Additionally, some new bits of information have surfaced.

Apple’s tablet device has been the subject of numerous rumors and speculations over the years. With many more companies offering similar devices, it is ripe time of Apple to jump in and take market lead. And it seems Apple is making its weapons ready to do the same soon.

According to “inside sources”, Apple has designed three prototypes of the device. The earlier two designs were discarded due to battery and memory issues. The first prototype featured a 7-inch display which was judged to be too small. The screen size of the second prototype is unknown while the third prototype is believed to have a 10.7 inch screen.

If this information is true, we can expect Apple to release a tablet device with a 10.7 inch screen.

Most netbooks feature 10 or 11 inch screens. However, Apple’s tablet device is not meant to compete with netbooks. Instead it is a media player with communication capabilities added to it.

The Apple tablet device is believed to look very similar to Apple’s other flagship product–the iPhone. Most tablet PCs look very similar to a laptop. Perhaps, Apple’s tablet computer will come with a single button like the iPhone or iPod Touch and stand out from the competitors’ designs.

The tablet computer will also feature 3G networking. Most tablet PCs available today support Wi-Fi only but we can expect 3G support in the very near future. There is no information as to which wireless carrier will supply 3G service to Apple’s tablet computer.

Apple’s tablet computer is designed to replace full-sized books, magazine pages and newspapers. In addition, it will also support games, video playing and images. It will feature a high-definition resolution of 720p. Currently, a few tablet computers such as the Archos 5 already support HD.

Apple’s tablet device will run on the iPhone OS. If this is true, users will be able to access the App Store to download apps. The App Store already features a plethora of software and is expected to grow exponentially in the coming years.

There are reports that Steve Jobs killed Apple’s previous tablet computers because they didn’t meet his standards. The latest prototype may also be discarded–there is a possibility for that to happen. Apple’s earlier venture in the same field in 1993 was a disaster and so it seems Jobs is not taking any chances. He wants to get this done perfectly or never launch at all. If Apple’s tablet device becomes a success, it will be the first one to do so. Till date all tablet computers have been a failure in the market.
