Apple launches the iPad
Note: Earlier, there were speculations that the device would be called “iSlate”. We were proven wrong!
Apple has finally unveiled the iPad, the much anticipated tablet computer from Apple. The touchscreen device is the size of a standard slate and doesn’t have a keyboard or mouse.
Steve Jobs stated–
“Using this thing is remarkable – it’s so much more intimate than a laptop, and it’s so much more capable than a smartphone.”
The iPad retains some of the cool features of the iPhone and at the same time is much closer to a standard netbook.
The device is 0.5 inches thick and comes with a 9.7 inch screen. It weighs 1.5 pounds and runs on the 1 Ghz Apple A4 chip. It will feature 16 to 64 GB of flash-based internal storage. The 16 GB version without 3G will cost $499 while the 64GB version with 3G will cost $829.
The iPad comes with 10 hour backup battery. However, the battery will last less longer if the device is used for gaming. The iPad doesn’t feature a camera.
Apple has already developed some in-house software for the iPad. Apple executive Phil Schiller showed off iWorks an office suite developed for the iPad.
The 3G service, from AT&T, costs 14.99 for up to 250 MB, and 29.99 for unlimited data. There are no contracts, given that the charges are prepaid. International deals are to be in place by June.
